Background to joint birthday celebration

We all have big birthday parties once in awhile to mark significant milestones, like out 1st birthday, probably our 13th on reaching the teenage years, of course our 21st, when we get the "key to the door" (very overated). Then we slow down a bit, when we realise that we are getting old and who wants to celebrate that! Perhaps, we celebrate our 30th, then maybe our 40th but after that it looks increasingly like hard work, especially when you go to bed around 9pm, just when a real party gets going! You then decide that parties could be afternoon affairs (remembering that your friends are the same age), and that way everyone can still be in bed by 9pm. And yes, it was at one of these afternoon parties, in fact Jenny's dad Peter's 80th, when Jenny got the idea, from her cousins I believe, that her turning 60 (in 2020) would be a great time to have another big party. So, . . .

On the plane back to Melbourne, Jenny started discussing with me how great it would be to have a big 60th birthday party, as the relatives all said they would come across (from Adelaide) for such a big occassion, and Melbourne isn't that far away. This was a surprise to me, as Jen was not really into celebrating her birthday with parties. As the flight progressed it seemed she had given it a lot of thought in such a short space of time, even down to choosing the party's location, the Richmond Rowing Club Boathouse.

Jenny was now well into planning mode, thinking of how many to invite, it was then estimated to be approaching 100 or so, of course not everyone will come she said. The food and drink menu was being formulated and we were still in the air! And it's only a short flight!

Then I mentioned that celebrating 60 is indeed a big milestone and I was all for it, but 70 was even a bigger milestone and I reach that in December 2019, six months before her 60th. "Eek!, sorry, I forgot about that one", she said. After a short pause, "Let's have a joint party in May 2020!"

So, back at home in Melbourne, and without delay, she started planning in earnest, the invitees spreadsheet created, caterers chosen and the party theme chosen, 60's & 70's era dress up! And there has to be dancing and singing, (karaoke?).

My contribution is this website and the blogs that will appear along the journey.

Your Take-away

  • Party time is May 2nd 2020, a Saturday evening, so please put it in your diary now
  • Invitees will be sent an email invitation early 2019 with an interim RSVP via this website (and we will finalise late 2019 or early 2020)
  • Dress code optional, but encouraging everyone to appear in fashions of the 60's & 70's (you know you can do it!)
  • It has been decreed jointly, that it is a NO Birthday Present event, as having you attend is our present (besides we can sell the photos of your indiscretions at the party to the media later!)

Cheers Peter
