My 1970s: from 10 - 19 years old!
WRITTEN BY JENNY MOWATT ON 8 DECEMBER 2019
A big decade for me, lots of activity and change.
During this decade, I completed my high school years; had my first 'love'; travelled all the way to South Africa for a year as an exchange student; made the decision to make hospitality my career (still have no idea why!); and finished the decade starting my first job.
Let me take you through a few (slightly less than Pete's 60s) of my highlights.
Music
My parents' record collection left me with a love of rock 'n roll. So I have wonderful memories of dancing to Suzi Q's 'Devil Gate Drive' in the carport of my friend's 15th birthday party (and still dancing in 2017 in Melbourne when she last toured here!).
Then came the amazing eye-popping suggestiveness of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' - those songs could really bring a party to life. This was definitely the music track of my year in South Africa.
A bit of a hint about the music genre on party night . . .I have included the video clip to ensure you are ready for the night.

Travel
Amazingly, I had the most memorable travel experience in the middle of this decade. In 1976, I spent a year in South Africa as a Rotary Exchange Student. Oh the joys I had and the fond memories of lots of aerogrammes (those little blue fold up letters), taking photos with a film camera then converted to slides and only one phone call home to my family for the whole year - on my birthday!
But what an experience, a completely different country, culture, school (the uniform was a bit of a throw-back to the English public school heritage) and language, albeit during the apartheid era!

Fashion of the 70s
I remember a couple of key fashion moments for me personally.
1974 end of year school social - hot pink & bright green floral long bibbed dress with hot pink blouse and amazing mutton-bone sleeves (thank you Mum). I certainly wasn't going to be missed!
At the end of the decade, 1979, working part-time in a over 25s night club (the irony of being 19 years old!), our uniform was another floor length black dress that was a little low cut for me, so I wore the 'on-trend' black choker with white flower to fill the void (so to speak).
Not sure what part of this decade I will take my party outfit from, but I hope this gives you some inspiration for yours.
Party Costumes
I am guessing most of you don't have a 70s outfit tucked away in your wardrobe, or do you? Anyway, I have repeated Peter's useful links from his blog to source 'costumes' from - very ABBA inspired.
So for those of you around in the 1970s, I hope you bring your fondest memories, brightest fashion and rocking dance moves to our party. Because, that's what I am doing!
Jenny
